Ransome, Arthur.  The Fool of the World and the Flying Ship.  Illustrated by Uri  Shulevitz.  New York: Farrar, 1968. 

When the Fool of the World hears that the Czar has offered his daughter to anyone who can build a flying ship, the Fool decides to try.  He sets off with a few crusts of black bread.  Along the way, he shares his food with an old man.  As a result, the Fool finds himself on a fantastic journey to the Czar’s palace, where he must pass some wild tests!  (AB)
