1967 Caldecott
Ness, Evaline.  Sam, Bangs & Moonshine.  New York: Holt, 1966.

Sam is a liar. She claims her dead mother is a mermaid, that she has a fierce lion for a pet, and that an old rug is really a chariot drawn by dragons. Thomas believes everything she says. He even believes her when she says she has a pet kangaroo.  But lying can be dangerous.  Sam’s “moonshine” lies nearly cost Thomas and Sam’s cat, Bangs, their lives. (AB)
