1962 Caldecott
Brown, Marcia.  Once a Mouse.  New York: Scribner, 1961.

A mystical hermit, pondering big and little, rescues a mouse from a hungry crow and proceeds to transform it into larger and larger creatures.  When it finally becomes a majestic tiger, it loses its humility, and the hermit returns it to its original state.  The wood cut illustrations are interesting.  (RR)
