1950 Caldecott
Politi, Leo.  Song of the Swallows.  New York: Scribner, 1949.

Every year on St. Joseph’s day, hundreds of  swallows descend on the Capistrano  Mission in California. They stay all summer, building their nests under the Mission arches, twittering from flower to colorful flower, and drinking from the fountains. Near the end of summer, the swallows fly away. A small boy named Juan wonders where they go and how they know when to return. Most of all, he wonders if he can make a garden beautiful enough for the swallows to nest at his  house. (AB)
