1944 Caldecott
Thurber, James.  Many Moons.  Illustrated by Louis Slodbodkin.  New York: Harcourt, 1943.

Once upon a time, Princess Lenore became ill. Her father, the King, offered her anything her heart desired.  Princess Lenore assured the King that she would get better if only she could have—THE MOON! Well, the King called the Lord High Chamberlain, the Royal Wizard, and the Royal Mathematician.  Over the years, they had obtained a lot of crazy things for the King. But, how in the world could they get the moon for Princess Lenore?  (AB)
