1941 Caldecott
Lawson, Robert.  They Were Strong and Good.  New York: Viking, 1940.

This is the story of a Scotch sea captain who married a little Dutch girl. It is the story of their daughter, who grew up in a convent and learned to speak four languages. It is the story of a Rebel preacher, his wife and their son. That son became a Confederate soldier who grew up to marry the girl from the convent. Their son was so proud of the way his parents and grandparents helped to build this country, that he wrote and illustrated this book! (AB)
