Handforth, Thomas.  Mei Li.  New York: Doubleday, 1938.

A little Chinese girl named Mei Li wishes to go to the fair.  But only boys are allowed to go, so she bribes her brother with a lapis blue marble to take her to the city gate.  When the Kitchen God arrives, he tells her "This house is your kingdom."  Mei Li replies, "It will do for awhile, anyway."
