To New Town Residents:
On behalf of the Mayor and Town Council, we want to welcome you to Mt. Airy. We are sure you will find that Mt. Airy is friendly, welcoming and family oriented. Mt. Airy places a great deal of emphasis on volunteerism and community, and there are many areas in which you can become involved. You will find on this website many materials to help orient you to the community.
Mt. Airy has approximately 8,000 residents and is nearly evenly split between Frederick and Carroll County. We have several parks and other recreation areas, and both counties also have much to offer. The Town also has several events during the year, including Spring Fling every May, Fall Festival every October, as well as a Flag Day 5K run, Flag Day Celebration and Christmas in Old Town.
If you need emergency services, you can dial 911; for non-emergency calls to the police, call 301/829-0218.
Mt. Airy is governed by a Mayor and five-member Town Council; Town Hall is located at 110 S. Main Street, and the telephone numbers are 301/829-1424, 301/831-5768 and 410/795-6012. Council meetings are on the first Monday starting at 7:30 pm.
You should know that trash is currently picked up for Carroll County residents on Tuesdays, and therefore should be at the curb, in clear or see-through bags, by 6:00 AM or, to be safe, the evening before. Recycling for Carroll County residents are picked up on Wednesdays and should be out very early that morning or the evening before. Trash for Frederick County residents is picked up on Fridays, and should be at the curb in clear or see-through bags by 6:00 AM or the evening before. Recycling for Frederick County residents is picked up on Tuesdays.
We are pleased to announce that yard waste materials (grass clippings, leaves, branches, etc.) will be picked up monthly or, depending on the month, bi-monthly, beginning in May. Contact Town Hall at 301/829-1424 for more information, or watch for information in the weekly Gazette or biweekly Messenger.
Although trash pickup is paid for by your town taxes, do note that combined water/sewer bills are sent quarterly, in January, April, July and October. Also note that the Town does require building permits for many building changes, including fences, so try to check with Town Hall before signing a contract or beginning work.
For more information, you can call Town Hall at 301/829-1424, take a look at the Town Hall page in the bi-weekly Messenger, or closely review our website.
There are a large number of volunteer opportunities in the community for those who may be interested - ranging from working with children to working with the various Town committees or events committees. Watch the local newspapers, have a look at our website or contact Town Hall if you have questions.
Again, Welcome to Mount Airy, and we look forward to your taking part in our community.
Sincerely yours,
Town Hall and Town Council
