In 2000, Chris Crutcher received the MAE
Award. The committee cited: Athletic Shorts, Chinese Handcuffs,
The Crazy Horse Electric Game, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes,
Stotan! and Running Loose.
In high school in the remote logging town of Cascade, Idaho, Crutcher says that he charmed his way out of trouble. “I was rebellious, really, and I didn’t want to do anything anybody told me to do.” Crutcher lives in the Northwest and is a therapist who works with teens. “Kids expect life to be fair because they’ve been taught that it should be—and when it isn’t, the shock is tremendously painful.” When you read a Crutcher book, you know that you've found a friend.
