CCGS Research Policy and Fees

1) Request for General Genealogical Research

If you would like us to perform research for you, a volunteer will examine the Society’s extensive holdings. We do not research at other repositories. You must complete the research form we have provided indicating exactly what information you need, and include a fee for the initial hour of research. The fee is $15 for members of the Carroll County Genealogical Society and $20 for non-members. If no information can be found, the fee is not refundable. Each additional hour will be the same price but the volunteer will consult with you before proceeding beyond the first hour. Photocopying costs are $0.25/page. The length of time required to complete a request depends upon many factors, but the volunteer will remain in contact with you. After completing the research, copying fees and postage to send the accumulated material will be tallied and a bill sent along with the research.

Click on this link to fill out a Research Request Form online. Then print it out and send it with your payment (check or money order only) for the first hour of research to: CCGS Research, P.O. Box 1752, Westminster, MD 21158. Make check payable to: Carroll County Genealogical Society. If you have a question before requesting research, you may contact us at: ccgs1752@hotmail.com.

2) Request for Copy of a Marriage License

If you would like us to obtain a copy of a marriage license from the digitized images of the originals at the Carroll County Court House Annex, the fee is $10 for up to three licenses. This covers copies, postage, and the volunteer’s time. Note: if no license can be found, the fee is not refundable. You must supply names of both bride and groom (if known) and approximate time frame for the marriage.

Be aware that the amount of information included on a license varied considerably from almost nothing in the early period to significant amounts for more recent licenses. The most recent licenses asked for social security numbers. If that information has not been removed, the license is not yet available for copying. In the past, some religious denominations did not require a government-issued license, so your ancestor may not have needed one.
