Winfield Mile, 1 January 2007.
Rios, Stick Set Records at Winfield.

Javier Rios and Sherry Stick set course records at the annual Winfield Mile, held on January 1.

After a rainy night sixty runners and several really neat dogs appeared out of the fog in front of South Carroll High School. Included in the group were Chris Monheim and four others from Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, marking the second year that the race has had an interstate flavor.

Rios, a native of Spain and now a resident of Mt. Airy, finished first by a narrow but definite margin over David Ewbanks from Chambersburg, who repeated his second place finish from last year. Both bettered the time of 4:36 set by Ben Duke in 2005.

Phil Diven--a South Carroll graduate, who won last year's race--finished third, with FSK cross-country standout Arthur Leathers in fourth and Tim Sick from Chambersburg in fifth.

Bob Walker from Chambersburg finished as the first masters runner, while grandfather Bob Ryan, who accompanied five year old Jordan down the course, finished as the top senior runner. A special note should go to the effort of Jon Hill, who not only finished as the first state trooper but also as the first in the canine division. Whether the German Shepherd and the Lab that crossed the finish line with him improved his time, or whether he slowed theirs, is a matter for future discussion.

As has happened every year this century--which by the way began on January 1, 2001--it was Show Time for Sherry Stick. Starting in the front line with the big boys, or at least the fast ones, Sherry was in the top ten the whole way down the course, and her time of 5:02 breaks the course record she set in 2005 and tied in 2006. Second place was captured by Chambersburg's Haley Thomas, who narrowly finished in front of her coach Chris Monheim, who while he didn't get honored for winning an open or age group category, did win a random prize.

High school runners Liz Pickett and Becky Leathers finished in third and fourth places, while Mira Foote, back from injury rehab, finished fifth as the first masters runner. Dee Nelson, running her third race in the last twenty-four hours, chugged in as the first senior runner before heading home for a well-deserved nap.
